What is erosion control, and who needs it?

Erosion control keeps disturbed soil from washing off a construction site and into the street, the storm drain, or the creek downstream — a mix of practices that hold soil in place or catch it before it leaves. TXR150000 defines small construction activity to include clearing, grading, and excavating that disturb at least one acre and less than five acres. On nearly every dirt-moving job of that size in North Texas, a set of controls goes in before work starts and stays until the ground is stable again.

Which controls a site needs depends on its soils, slopes, and drainage — the right mix is a plan decision, not a catalog order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which erosion controls does my site need?

It depends on the site — its slopes, its soils, where the water goes, and what the plan sheet and the city require. Most jobs use a perimeter of sediment control plus a stabilized exit at minimum, then add slope and channel protection where the terrain demands it.

Do I install everything at once?

No. Controls go in by phase: perimeter and access controls first, before the ground opens up; slope and channel protection as grading exposes those areas; stabilization as the work finishes. Sequencing is part of the plan.

One contractor, the whole program

Erosion control is one of Terradyne's service divisions, alongside SWPPP Services for the plan and the permit and site maintenance for the upkeep. The advantage of one contractor across all three is that the controls on the plan are the controls in the ground, and the crew that installs them is the crew that comes back to maintain them — nothing falls through the gap between trades.
