The fence protects a tree from distance; the boards protect it from proximity. When demolition or excavation has to happen inside swinging distance of a keeper tree, the trunk gets its own armor. What is trunk (board) protection?
Trunk protection straps a hard, thick surface — 2x4 boards — around a tree to shield it from falling and flying debris during demolition and excavation. Trunk armor is 2-by-4-by-6-foot boards wired vertically around the trunk, sized by trunk diameter, with a foam-cell wrap option for high-value trees.
Why boards, and why before the work
A preserved tree cannot step back from the work happening beside it — falling material and swinging equipment reach the trunk before anyone can react, and bark does not heal on a schedule. The boards exist to take those hits first, and they are sacrificial on purpose: a scarred 2x4 is a receipt, a scarred trunk is a loss. When a city writes tree preservation into the permit set, the same inspectors who walk the erosion controls check the tree fence too - protection goes up before the first machine tracks in.
