When a pump is running, everything the site did right can be undone at one hose end. A dewatering filter bag is the control that stands between the pump and the storm system, and it is the piece an inspector walks straight to when pumping is underway. What is a dewatering filter bag?

A dewatering filter bag is a sewn geotextile envelope that a pump discharges into: sediment stays in the bag while filtered water seeps out through the fabric. A filter bag is the simplest honest answer to pumped water: sediment stays in the bag, and what leaves the site is water a reviewer can watch run clear.

What the regional detail specifies

The bag is a specified product, not a commodity guess. The iSWM construction-control standard details include a standard detail for dewatering controls. The iSWM dewatering detail calls for the bag to be a non-woven, needle-punched geotextile that meets ASTM criteria D-4632, D-4833, D-3786, D-4355, D-4491, and D-4751. The list reads like alphabet soup until a submittal gets kicked back for the one number nobody checked — specifying by the standard is what keeps the product argument out of the field. The base under the bag matters as much as the fabric. The iSWM detail sets the filter bag on coarse aggregate, established grass, mulch, straw, or other prepared underlayment to protect the bag. A bag thrown on raw subgrade grinds against rock and clods with every surge of the pump, and a punctured bag filters nothing. The detail also puts the bag on the plans, not just in the field. The iSWM detail requires filter bag locations to be shown on the drawings.

The connection is where field improvisation fails first. On the iSWM detail, the pump discharge hose is secured to a sewn-in spout on the bag. A hose shoved loose into a slit works until the first pressure surge blows it out and the discharge runs raw on the ground. Bag sizing follows the pump — an undersized bag on an oversized pump inflates like a balloon and fails at the seams, which is why the manufacturer's flow ratings decide the pick.

The manufacturer's book governs

Beyond the regional geometry, the product's own literature is the standard the detail defers to. Under the iSWM detail, bag capacity, installation, maintenance, and removal should conform to published manufacturer literature. That covers the questions crews improvise on — how full is full, whether the bag can be moved once loaded, and how the spent bag and its sediment leave the site.

Reading a working bag

A healthy filter bag has a look: plump but not drum-tight, weeping evenly across its whole footprint, discharge arriving muddy and seep leaving clear. When the bag goes hard and round, the fabric is blinding off — the pores have loaded with fines and the pump is now inflating a balloon. When the weep concentrates at one corner, the bag is sitting in a low spot and the base needs re-grading before the fabric wears through. And when the seep itself runs dirty, the bag has torn or the flow has found the spout seam — either way the control has stopped controlling, and the swap happens now, not at shift change.

Clay water and the patience problem

North Texas pumping has a complication the detail sheets do not dwell on: Blackland clay. The finest clay particles ride suspended long after sand and silt have settled, and a fabric that stops everything coarser can still pass a tea-colored discharge. The honest fixes are time and staging — draw from the top of the standing water instead of stirring the bottom, let the hole settle overnight before pulling it down, and land the seep on grass or aggregate rather than pavement on its way off site. A bag is a filter, not a treatment plant, and running it like one keeps the results defensible.
